Today, on the 26th day of the Third month in the Third year of Kansei, I left Edo and set out with more than a little anxiety on a journey. I am a whitecapped ocean wave that moves always but never reaches any shore, and I am as fragile as the foam that rises from the water only to vanish a moment later. In the morning I ask for a meal in Kazusa Province, and that night I beg for a place to rest in Musashi Province.
